Appeals
Judges are human beings and therefore make mistakes. And appeals courts often read the law differently than trial courts do. Therefore, appeals present a real opportunity to revisit the decisions trial court judges make, both favorable and unfavorable.
Will has experience working on appeals on a variety of issues. This work incudes studying the record from the trial court, researching in depth the applicable law, drafting the necessary memoranda of law, and presenting the appeal to a panel of judges. It also involves complying with the complicated rules appellate courts set and filing various documents to ensure compliance with those rules.
Will’s experience includes:
Successfully defending a Canadian accounting firm from a claim for trust funds before a trial court and on appeal.
Successfully defending a judgment awarding pension benefits to a spouse against her ex-husband on appeal.
